Folds:
Above are the four major types of folds commonly found in fabric.
The column fold is usually associated with skirts and dresses on pixel dolls and occur in fabric that is fastened from a point and left to hang leaving an undulated surface (also called a ruffle).
A Inert fold occurs when fabric is allowed to lay over an object imperfectly, this type of fold is often found in blankets, rugs and other peices of fabric allowed to lay haphazardly on the ground.
The interlocking fold is often the bane of many pixel dollers and is one of the most common fold we deal with. It is often found in pant cuffs, shirt sleeves, neck kercheifs and socks/leggings. This type of fold occurs when cloth is bunched together around an object or anchored at two points.
The final type of fold is called a coil or drape fold and occurs when cloth fastened at one or more points is allowed to drape down at excessive lenghths, the train of a ball gown, or overly long curtains often form this type of fold.
Please feel free to use the examples above when drawing or shading your own folds during your pixel dolling exploits.
